Hm.

To those of you who have encountered the porcupine, I must ask that you treat her well and take care not to upset her. Any injury or distress that comes her way will result in a visit from me.

[His voice is low, serious and a little dry.]

New arrivals, I am Duran. As one of the staff of this Keep, it is my duty to ensure you are able to protect yourself should harm come your way. If any of you are capable of combat, let me know. If any wish to learn, I am willing to teach.

[Duran pauses.]

You need only ask.

[That said, he continues his wandering the Keep, walking the halls at a leisurely pace and keeping to the dark more often than not. It's a nice night out, so feel free to go for a stroll and bump into him!]

[And she's scrambling to get out of his way.]

[Duren halts immediately and looks down. Frowning slightly, he tilts his head at her.]

[She smiles and offers him a small wave.]

Hello. I don't think I've seen you before. My name is Thumbelina.

[Bump into as in literally, right?

Because that's what Rapunzel does.

Not purposefully, of course- but she's still easily distracted by things in the Keep - it's so like her tower yet so, so different at the same time that she's constantly curious.

As it is, the sudden feeling of smacking into someone is startling and she yelps, backpedaling and hitting the wall, her frying pan clattering to the ground.]

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! Are you okay?

[He crouches.]

[That is one tiny woman. Duran's never seen anything like her.]

I don't mean to be rude but, you are rather... tiny.

[He puts a foot back to steady himself, more out of habit than actual need. Duran eyes Rapunzel, then the frying pan before looking back to the girl and arching an eyebrow.]

I'm fine. You need not worry about causing me damage.

[You'd kinda expect him to lighten up a fraction but Duran continues with his serious attitude.]

Might I ask why you have a frying pan?

Oh, good.

[Relieved, she bends to snatch her pan back up, hefting it in her hands as she eyes him. He doesn’t look like he has pointy teeth, but he’s still pretty intimidating.

She smiles weakly, and holds it up.]

Um…self defense?

[Oh but he might. If only the man would smile once in a while.

Duran does however smirk. It's small, faint, but as much evidence of amusement as Rapunzel is going to get.]

Would a sword not do a better job? Or a club if beating your opponent is what you prefer?

[She looks down at her pan. She’s clenching it a little tighter than she might need to be, and her palms are a little sweaty.]

Um…I don’t think me holding a sword is a good idea. [She perks.]

This works great, though! [She grins now, and rests a fist on her hip as she expertly gives the pan a flip. Look, she doesn’t even hit herself on the head this time!]

[Duran makes an amused sound.]

With the right teacher, you might surprise yourself. Should you wish to learn, or better your skills with the... frying pan, do not hesitate to send notice via journal.

[He falls silent, any humor slipping from his features and his usual frown returning.]

[She has to admit, the idea of learning new tricks with the pan is something she's a little curious about.]

I'm Rapunzel. [She stated, smiling broadly. She doesn't offer her hand or anything, proper etiquette and how to actually meet someone fir the first time are outside her range of expertise.

She does smile brightly, however.]

'Capable' would be an extreme understatement, but I am able to fight.

Why the inquiry? Taking stock?

[She's walking the grounds late at night, trying to dry her very wet wings. She had fallen asleep in the thermal pools and stayed later than she had intended. Now she could not sleep until they were somewhat dry instead of sopping. So she was circling the barracks when she sees the figure of a person moving against the background.]

[So. Damn. Happy. Duran's eyes narrow a fraction at the constant smiling but he says nothing of it.]

[His voice is pretty flat and calm.]

To your question, I cannot say for sure. There is that which you bring with you, and that which you and I have not yet seen. I only ask that all within the Keep be prepared.
